Are you one of the many Cincinnati, OH citizens who fears the dentist? You are certainly not alone! Every member of our staff understands how you feel because we, too, have felt that same fear! We are here to help by providing solutions that actually work!
We will never tell you to simply get over your fear because we know that things aren’t that easy. Instead, we provide an environment that allows you to be afraid but will also make you feel more relaxed. Our fun and cheerful disposition will ease your anxiety a little bit. We also make an effort to explain what is happening so that you always know as much as you want to know about your procedure.
For patients who need a little bit more, we offer sedation dentistry. Dental sedation allows our patients to relax before their procedures begin so that every appointment is completely comfortable!
Let Go of Past Experiences
Before we discuss how we can help you break the cycle of fear, we need to take a moment to look back on why you feel fear in the first place. Most fearful patients have had a terrible experience as a child. That fear sticks with you! Once you identify the fear, you will have more success overcoming it. We can help!
Sedation: Breaking the Cycle of Fear
Fear is a funny thing. If you don’t address it, it will continue to progress into a deeper and deeper fear. When you feel afraid, your body tenses your muscles in preparation for a fight or flight response. While you are feeling tension, any hint of pain will seem like more than what it is. That heightened pain response makes you feel even more afraid, which begins the cycle again.
In order to help you feel more comfortable in the dental office, we have to first break the cycle of fear. We do that by taking tension out of the equation. With the help of dental sedation, you will feel so relaxed that you won’t be worried about pain or fear. After a couple of successful appointments, your fear will begin to diminish!
Is Sedation Right For You?
Of course, you must first decide if sedation is the best solution for you. We can help you make that decision during a conversation here at the office. We will take a look at your medical history to ensure that you are safe to use sedatives. From there, we will determine which sedation method would work best for you.
Nitrous Oxide – Nitrous oxide is a very common form of sedation that is used in offices all around the world. To experience relaxation, you simply inhale the gas into your nose. While we are working, you will be breathing in the “laughing gas.” As soon as we complete our work, we will remove the gas, and you will feel normal within a minute or two! This is great for patients who feel mild anxiety about the dentist.
Oral Conscious Sedation – Oral conscious sedation works differently. To take advantage of this deeper relaxation, we would need to prescribe a sedative to you. You would take the pill about an hour before your procedure. By the time you arrive at our office, you would feel very comfortable. Many patients who take oral conscious sedation actually nap through their procedure! The effects are much stronger and lasting. You will need a ride to and from the office.
Obviously fearful patients are the most likely to take advantage of sedation dentistry, but there are other patients who can also benefit. Take a look at a few unlikely benefits to sedation dentistry below.
Gag Reflex – Patients with a severe gag reflex can finally have a comfortable appointment with the help of dental sedation. Sedation relaxes the muscles responsible for your gagging which will in turn allow you to sit back and experience a gag-free cleaning or procedure!
Special Needs Patients – Patients who are often overlooked are patients with special needs. Those who suffer from mental handicaps find it difficult to relax in a dental appointment due to fear and simply not understanding what is happening. Sedation can allow these patients the freedom to experience a good dental cleaning and exam just like everyone else!
Busy Schedule – Serious dental work is often broken into several smaller appointments to make it easier on the patient sitting in the chair. However, this makes life very difficult when you have a full schedule! Sedation allows busy patients to get all of their work done in a single sitting, which means fewer missed days of work!
